Known locally as Lefkosia, Nicosia is the capital city of Cyprus. Located on the River Pedieos, it is the seat of government and the main business centre. Naturally, there are many ex-pats to be found here. The capital is still divided since the Turkish invasion in 1974 with the Turkish and Greek Cypriots claiming the Northern and Southern regions of the city respectively. Overall, there is a population of some 350,000 people in a capital which has been so since the 11th century.

Although the city has been destroyed more than once by conquerors, there are still enough vestiges to enjoy the past. The Venetian city wall, which is 4.5 metres thick and once had 3 gates, was built between 1567 and 1570 by Giulio Savorgnano offers a glimpse of local history. The Famagusta Gate is now used as a cultural centre while other parts of the wall are home to administrative offices. The historic heart of the city is clearly found inside the walls, but the modern city has extended and grown beyond.
Compared to some of the resorts on the Southern coast, Nicosia offers an all together different experience when it comes to a first date or romantic day for two. Heaped in history though, you can easily forget or ignore it is Cyprus' main business district by heading for the museums full of antiquities and treasures.
